1.0 Dental Assisting

Course Description:
The Colorado School of Dental Assisting, since 2001, offers a 12-week Dental Assisting Program emphasizing hands-on learning, in a clinical environment. Taught in a state-of-the-art dental office, the Dental Assistant Program has at its disposal modern equipment and supplies, needed to land a job as a dental assistant.

New for 2010 is a career counselor to help you find an externship and a job as a dental assistant. Resume writing, interviewing techniques and job seeking skills will be covered.

All basic dental assisting skills are taught, and most expanded duty dental assisting or EDDA tasks as well. This course is also suitable for students interested in going on to become dental hygienists or even dentists,as it would give you experience and technical knowledge in the dental field. The Colorado and National School of Dental Assisting sets the standard of education in dental assisting in Colorado and nation-wide.

Classes are held on either a Saturday or a Sunday, plus a Thursday evening, for a total of 12 hours of instruction per week. Students are able to hold a full-time job while attending the Dental Assisting Program, since the class is on weekends and evenings. Students complete 144 hours of classroom and laboratory instruction, plus a 32-hour externship.

A CPR certification course is included in our training for all students. In addition, you can perform and receive professional tooth whitening (bleaching) as part of the dental assisting course (value of $400). Graduates receive a Certificate of Completion and a Certificate in Radiology upon graduating from the program.

TUITION for the Dental Assisting Program is: $2895.
An installment plan is available. The installment plan consists of:
Deposit of $150
First installment of $800
Second installment of $900
Third installment of $1045.

To register for this course, a deposit of $150 is required.


Course Objectives:
The graduates of the dental assisting course will be able to secure an entry-level position in a dental office as a dental assistant upon graduation.

1.1 Orientation to the Dental Office

Description:
This is taught the first week and ensures that students all have a basic knowledge of the staff members, equipment and general workings of a dental office.
Objectives:
The students will demonstrate a knowledge of the dental team, equipment and areas of a dental office.

1.2 Disinfection, Treatment Room Care and Sterilization

Description:
This unit provides students with information and practice regarding sterilization and disinfection, OSHA standards, infectious material spills, and instrument and treatment room care.


Objectives:
This module provides a basic skill in dental assisting: preparing and maintaining the treatment room of a dental office.

1.3 Dental Anatomy

Description:
In this unit, students will learn how to identify primary and permanent teeth, as well as surfaces, parts of teeth and tissue.


Objectives:
Students will learn how to chart a peer's mouth.

1.4 Radiography

Description:
In this unit, students will be introduced to techniques of taking x-rays and exposing them, as well as operation safety. Students will then practice taking x-rays and developing them during the remainder of the program. This unit meets the requirement of Rule X of the Colorado State Board of Dental Examiners.

Objectives:
Students will be able to expose a full-mouth series of radiographs that is acceptable for diagnostic purposes.

1.5 Four-Handed Dentistry

Description:
Students will be introduced to chairside dental assisting.
Objectives:
Students will learn to place and remove rubber dams, perform mouth rinses, place and remove cotton rolls, and instrument transfer.

1.6 Dental materials, cements and taking impressions

Description:
This unit covers different materials that are used in a dental office. Also included are making custom impression trays, taking alginate impressions and pouring up and trimming casts. Also in this unit, students will learn how to make a custom night-guard bleaching tray.

Objectives:
Students will be able to pour up and trim model casts, and make a custom bleaching tray.

1.7 Restorative Dentistry

Description:
In this unit, students will learn about patient care and care of sharp materials during anesthesia administration. Students will also learn how to assemble a syringe. Students will learn to identify major hand instruments, burs and handpieces, and learn instrumentation for different dental procedures. Also, cements will be introduced and manipulation of cements for their use.


Objectives:
Students will be able to assist in restorative dental procedures.

1.8 Surgery, Prosthodontics, Endodontics and Periodontics

Description:
Students will learn how to assist during oral surgery, root canals, scaling and root planing and the application of dentures. Students will also learn how to remove sutures.

Objectives:
Students will be able to assist with all the major dental procedures.

1.9 Externship

Description:
One full, 8-hour day of observation and assisting in a working dental office. Additional optional 32-hour externship is available.

Objectives:
Students will gain knowledge and confidence working with live patients and other members of the dental team.
